And so it was the me that would wake up in the morning and be like, I'm doing this. And I'm like the the sense of being oriented. So, um, so I've had to be gentle. Our country is on fire. And I'm not ready. That feels like what was lost. And, um. With what was the first time I went back? With with my boys. I have two teenagers. Um, um, we found, um, like, we're going around the site and everything is just ashes. Like, it's crazy that that, um, like, think these things are solid, like, glass and metal are just gone. Um, and so, you know, we have the, the suits on and everything, and, and, um, and my son pulls this out. It's like this heart. It's so beautiful. So that was something. And then the next minute, like the pogo sticks are still there, they were like for pogo sticks. And he took them and he took one to the the street and he's jumping on it. I got a video of him and it worked, you know, so I took the pogo sticks. I had them, like, in bags, like, you know, like, I don't know what to do with these pogo sticks, but, um, I can't remember if I have one or if I took all four. I don't know, um, even I mean, there's the memories of growing up and everything that happened in that house. And like, three days before the fire, two days before the fire, our house was filled with boys. It was a sleepover with six guys sleeping over and swinging on the swings. And these are high school students, like, swinging in their pajamas on the swings and and the pogo sticks. And so it just felt like a beautiful thing to see, like my son. Like jumping on that even in the midst of all that. So, um, like, so that day I looked, I looked for I looked for all the art supplies. Yeah, I did to see what happened to that inventory of everything we were about to do. And and there were stones. There were glass stones there. I didn't know what to do. You know everything. Like it's. Everything's toxic. Everything. Don't touch it. Don't breathe. Don't. So I left it all there. Um, but I took some photos. Um, and then I posted them on Facebook, and, um. And thanks to the Facebook friends who said, like, those are powerful. Like those that came through the fire. And, um, then I got this idea that I wanted to actually go try to get the stones, and we were about to have the the site cleared. So I got that 72 hour notice, and then I was like, and my back was out. But, um, I was like, I'm going to go back and try to get some. And I reached out to, um, the Samaritan's Purse people and, um. just at the off chance that they could come and they're like, yep. So suddenly. Yeah. It's snowing. They were coming. I was like, wait, I have to be ready for them to not only dig out those stones, but make touchstones. And, um. That would be healing on their own journeys. And that was that was so amazing because I had bought myself more paints and paper, but I couldn't bring myself to do anything. And again, it's like that. Me that's about to do things like is gone. But knowing they were coming, like I got ready and I made the paper, I punched the circles. I got the supplies so they could make touchstones. And, um. And I made this, um, it says, um, holding space to to nurture the seeds germinated by fire. And and that's the picture I took. Um, when I didn't take any stones, like, I just was like, these are here. Goodbye. And then when my my friend said, that's powerful. Are you going to use those stones? Right. And I was so. So that's what this is that invitation to come dig out those stones. And, um. So it says, what seeds are you holding? Uh, seeds of change. And, um, so that's what, like, we actually like. And I had left these because I had left all this there because I. But going back with them, I took, like, this paint survived. Like, look, this is a tube of soft paint and then and then this and but again, it it feels important. But I didn't know what to do with it, so, so I've just been using this because I don't know what I want to do yet with this, but but like, here are the stones and there's, um, there's ones that have dark ash and there's this dusty ones and there's ones that are almost clear and, and I have thousands of them now. And some of them we washed and cleaned and some of them are just in these buckets that are. But, um, but they're I don't yet know. Um, well, I'm starting we're starting to use them for folks to, to notice, like, what is my grieving journey? And um, and using these stones that have come through fire as part of it. So that's, um, that's what I found. And the person, the lead person, um, that was helping that day, she kept digging because we were looking for my wedding ring, but, um, we didn't find it. And these are from. They were with my wedding ring and jewelry. these were some of the first touchstones I ever started to work with that the whole touchstone process kind of started with these little stones like years ago. Um. , yeah, so, so many surprises. Yeah. And this is, um, this is the one I made that day with the volunteers there, and it just says, um, space for seeds germinated by fire. Like, I don't know what I'm going to make, but I want to hold space. I don't need to know. I don't need to be that person who knows what they're about to do. But there's space that will come through. Yeah. Thank you. , um, so the touchstones are an invitation to anchor something, whether it's a wish, whether it's a sense of connection, whether it's something that seems impossible or whether it's something that's like, oh my God, I love that. And I don't want to lose that because in trauma, so much gets washed away. When you're in stress, you can't remember what helps you. touchstones are an invitation to anchor a piece of clarity, a piece of support, but then to carry it over time. And the art is each moment of reconnecting with that sense of connection, with that sense of not being alone. And the art is how that rewires your brain. It's that that moment to be able to go from like, I feel confused, I feel exhausted, and then to pick up that stone and be like. Yes, I'm confused and exhausted and I have support and I'm not alone. Just taking that moment to connect. It's like I think of it as like time travel. Like it takes. It's like a portal back to a moment in time when you're connected with someone or with a wish or intention, and it shifts your your brain and your body. And so that's so touchstones are an invitation to transform trauma response. Like I knew which ones smelled and which ones didn't. And so I love walking around the block and, like, smelling the good smelling roses like. Ah. Yeah, yeah. It's it's so strange. Um, it's such a good question because, um, one of the things I took when I left and I didn't think our house was going to burn, but I still took all my touchstones, um, that I have over the years. And I have a bowl of, like, 100, More than 100 of them that I. Every morning I close my eyes, pick one, carry it with me through the day, put it in a different bowl. And so I cycle through those sources of wisdom and support as I go through my life. And I took all that. And it was so shocking that even though I took those with me, I could not reach into that bowl. I didn't take the bowl. I had a bag. I couldn't get them out. I couldn't do it. It just felt too painful, like I couldn't. And, um, so the stones that I took from that we dug out and that I, we found and we reclaimed. I just have to be really gentle about what they mean and when is not put a lot of pressure like this is what. , um, this is what we're going to do. Um, so gradually I've started to use them again. And there came a point where I was ready to start, put my put them in a bowl and put another bowl and start reaching. So I'm starting to get back to that practice and I'm starting to hold little workshops, um, where it's like a space, that window of time to notice, like, what am I grieving? And an art space to create, maybe create something that could be an antidote on that journey. So we did our first one this week, and someone came and we had these out there as a tool. We had paper, we had, paints we had. And someone made this beautiful painting of like the torn paper of different colors representing it from the fire to the healing. And she put the stones onto the it was all attached to a canvas, and that the black stone she put at the bottom, and she wrote around each one what it meant, like her mahjong table and her, and up to different parts of Like grieving and loss to hope. And just seeing the touchstones used in that way, like I was, I feel like they're finding their way. So it's not like I know what's going to happen with them. , um, but that seeing her do that inspired me. It's like, oh, that's a way. And that's a way forward. And, um, so, so I feel like as I reclaim these. They are different now. Like before the fire, I had 5000 touchstones in the garage ready to use them with our network of 1300 facilitators, like, ready to like there were kits and people could order online. We had to deactivate all that because like our, our, you know, the the garage was our studio for our whole organization. So. No, they don't mean that anymore. There's no kits you can order online. they're holding space for seeds germinated by fire at a gentle pace. And I don't need to know what's going to happen with them. And it's okay that there's these buckets of them that aren't even cleaned yet, and they're wrapped up, and I can clean them later. they're just holding space for hope. They're holding space for a journey. So as I, um, as I hold this, I guess what I want to. This is what my son found. Um, Sam. And as I walked out of the house, he didn't want to come. He didn't want to tell his story. Tucker didn't want to tell his story. No. I'm good. And they've been they've been doing really well. Um. And I have to honor that. They. For them, crying isn't necessarily part of how they're healing. Although, you know, from the day we learned our house was gone, I was like, we sat down in a circle. I'm like, you may see me crying. You may be crying. This is it's all part of the healing. It's all okay. that's not their path. And so as I left, I said, Sam, I'm bringing this. So, um, as I hold this, I just want to. Just hold space for the path we walked together. And the different ways we each walk through it. Like that. He's thriving. Is beautiful. That I'm, like, struggling to think straight is beautiful. Like I can have space for all that and that we can support each other with our different ways. So. So I'm just so grateful to, um, to hold space for our hearts, um, to just be connected on this journey. I'm so glad I have, like, it feels so good to hold this. I'm so grateful.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164614/file/299724#t=855.65,1199.58"}]},{"id":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164614/file/299724/index/90482","type":"AnnotationPage","label":{"en":["Auto-generated Index (2025-12-15 22:43:59) [Index]"]},"items":[{"id":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164614/file/299724/index/90482/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Introduction and Framing the Question","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164614/file/299724#t=0.0,16.0"},{"id":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164614/file/299724/index/90482/annotation/31","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The speaker introduces herself and sets the stage for the conversation by referencing the main question about loss and discovery.
