Okay, so where we lived in Altadena, um, a lot of people had really crazy pets. So we had someone up the street that had a giant tortoise. And so I'd always walk up the street and say hi to the tortoise. Occasionally I'd be out in my yard gardening, which was another of my favorite things about Altadena, is all the greenery and the climate. But then a guy on a horse would walk by and maybe five minutes later, like a guy with a parrot on his shoulder would walk by. So it's very eclectic, very diverse. And the nature obviously, too, is is a favorite memory of mine for sure. Yeah. Yeah. It was. I mean, especially at prep, at Flintridge Prep, the community was crucial. We had so many teachers and students who ended up losing their homes that it did feel kind of like we were all in this together. Um, we still have a text group with all the teachers who lost homes. We call it the Ashen Brethren. Um, so we'll text things like, hey, have you heard about this permitting thing? Or just like, hey, how are you guys doing? And then even with the students, it was. I don't know, it felt like, hey, how are you doing? We're all kind of going through this together. So it's been really crucial. I think I would feel so lonely if I was just going through this and didn't have anyone else who was kind of in the same situation. The students, oh my gosh. Okay, so this is going to make me cry. But the students, the um, the day that I came back, I actually took a little bit more time than other people. But the day that I came back, the students had all written welcome messages for me on the board, and it was just it was nice to feel like, hey, we know you're going through it, but we're here for you. And it just reminded me that it's, you know, we live in a special place, but I work in a special place, and that was really important to me that I was like, oh, okay. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I mean, I think that the idea of, like, students looking out for me and being like, hey, I found a pair of shoes that I think are your size. Do you want me to set them aside for you? So this feeling of like, everyone had our back. Um, the school that my kids went to, they, um, I rolled up to, like, drop them off. And they the school had, like, backpacks filled with supplies and, like, all kinds of stuff for them. And it just I knew that everyone was concerned about us and looking out for us. And, I mean, I think maybe I wasn't super surprised by that, but it was really humbling and just amazing that there are so many resources, like immediately sprang into action. And so that was pretty special. Yeah, I mean, I think so, and maybe I'm being a little bit cynical, but I think it's part of what concerns me about the lack of response and lack of, um, kind of warnings and things like that for West of Lake, which is traditionally a lot more black and brown. And so that worries me that there is some kind of like, you know, kind of class and, and whatnot, like inequity going on there, and that concerns me a lot, that maybe West of Lake isn't going to get the same amount of attention as some other parts, or that west of Lake will get attention. But then the people who had generational wealth there but now can't afford to rebuild, won't rebuild, and then it will end up looking like a completely different community. So the kind of history of redlining and the way that Altadena was this really safe space for black and brown folks, I think is something that helped shape a little bit of my understanding of why we were in the position that we were in. Okay, so this is actually this has given me a little kind of glimmer of hope. But at our lot where, you know, it's been cleared at this point, but I was really into native plants. So I had spent so much time gardening. And a bunch of my plants are still growing. So they grew back after the fire. And so my family and I, we go up there and we water them because it's like at some point, once we start rebuilding, I hope that I can transplant them and then plant them back after we've rebuilt. But being able to kind of like still go back there, water the plants, kind of have this tradition I think has been really special for us. Surprisingly well. Um, you know, they've obviously been really busy. I think you probably had a similar situation where it's just like, I'm going back to school, I'm going to do my activities and maybe not focusing on it as much. I was worried in the summer that since they had more time to reflect, that maybe things would hit them a little bit harder. But they've been good. I was unsure if they'd want to go up to the lot initially, and they've been really open to it, and now that we keep going and watering, I think it's pretty normal for them. Um, so they seem to be holding up pretty well. I just hope we come back stronger than we were before, and we were pretty great before. But I hope that we all survive this and come back as much of a diverse and quirky community as we were before.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164592/file/299701#t=3.48,289.92"}]},{"id":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164592/file/299701/index/90459","type":"AnnotationPage","label":{"en":["Auto-generated Index (2025-11-05 20:51:59) [Index]"]},"items":[{"id":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164592/file/299701/index/90459/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Quirky Pets and Eclectic Life in Altadena","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164592/file/299701#t=0.0,36.0"},{"id":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164592/file/299701/index/90459/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The speaker reminisces about the unique and diverse atmosphere of Altadena, where neighbors kept unusual pets like a giant tortoise, horses, and parrots.
