State, federal, local, nonprofit, all of it seemed like the only thing that helped was other Altadena residents. I got texts from friends to evacuate before I. I never got a text from the government to evacuate. Never got an email. Um, it was friends who checked on our home. It was friends who took a hose and put out spot fires on our front lawn. Um. I cannot believe that everything failed. So that's what I've lost. Is faith in everything I assumed would help me at that point. My phone didn't work. The power went out. Lost cell service. Nothing. Yeah. Not. Not just the government. Just everything. Every. Everything you just assume is going to work. What did I feel? I still relied on information from friends. Um, we didn't know our home was still standing until your dad told us. Right. Because he snuck into the neighborhood. Um, that's not the way it's supposed to be this day and age, and I'm. I'm frustrated by that. That really bothers me. Still, six months later. I worry about the next disaster. I don't know. No, not right now. I, I feel like there's just a tremendous disconnect. Um, people pointing fingers all the time. I don't really see, like, a concerted effort to fix the problem for the next disaster. I really feel like it has to be. I have to rely on myself, my immediate family, just in case. Yeah. yeah, it was frenetic. It was chaotic. It was, you know, being bombarded with texts from all of your friends. Um, during that time, during that 24 hour period. 36 hour period. It was being in the Facebook groups and there were the posts were not one every ten minutes, it was every 30s there was a new post. You had to keep up with everything. Um, it was frenetic. That's the best word I could describe. Just total chaos. Total chaos. Yes, I definitely turned towards immediate family friends to keep me focused. Um, our older son is severely disabled, so his needs are significant, and there's almost no time to think about the other things because you have to help him eat. You have to help him walk. You have to. He can't get out of the tub. So it was almost a distraction. Um, but at the same time, it was very difficult those days and weeks, two months afterwards because we weren't in our own home. Um, the home is set up for him. Other people's homes are not. A hotel room is not. And again, lost faith in all the systems that are supposed to help us. I mean, even our hotel room wasn't set up for a disabled person. Um, I don't know. It felt like everywhere we turned, there was disappointment. Yeah. I think everybody has to have a system in place at home. If you don't have water, you have to have water. Um, you have to have the flashlights that charge themselves. You have to have a plan with your neighbors for what you're going to do. I was not prepared at all to evacuate. Um, I think we all have funny stories of what we grabbed as we were evacuating. I hate hoodies, I think they're like the decline of Western civilization because everybody's wearing a hoodie now, everywhere. And I grabbed not one, but two hoodies. So I was living in hoodies for two months, which seemed really funny to me, but that's how unprepared I was. I just grabbed something that I wouldn't even want to wear. Um, it's really a moment for us to be introspective and step back and really have to count on yourself and be prepared, because I super, I'm super, super worried about the next disaster I really am. I found that we are extremely resilient. Um, our older son had to have half his brain removed to stop epilepsy, and I feel like the journey with him, all of his medical issues have made us hardened, sometimes too much. Um, my husband and I are very much, uh. We don't have a time machine. We can't go back in time and change stuff that happened. Um, so once we realize this was happening, we just kind of moved on from it. Um. And I like that about us. I like that we have that ability to just dust off, dust ourselves off and keep going. So I'm thankful for that. The importance of community. We lost our community. We lost our a lot of our neighbors. We can't just, um. Last night, my son said that he wanted to go to the pool with his friends in the community that he loves so much. They're all gone and includes you and your family. Um, I really am taking away from this how important it is to be surrounded by people you love, where you live. And that hurts right now. Yeah. Um. I don't think so. I keep thinking of, like, an object that I've lost or found. And I haven't lost or found any anything physical. Uh, I I'm really feeling the loss of community. It makes me sad. It makes me want to leave. Yeah.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164578/file/299687#t=4.52,361.75"}]},{"id":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164578/file/299687/index/90446","type":"AnnotationPage","label":{"en":["Auto-generated Index (2025-11-05 21:06:29) [Index]"]},"items":[{"id":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164578/file/299687/index/90446/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Loss of Faith in Support Systems","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164578/file/299687#t=0.0,74.0"},{"id":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164578/file/299687/index/90446/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The speaker recounts their deep disappointment in the various systems—state, federal, local, and nonprofit—that were expected to provide help during a crisis.
