I grew up on Castle Street, so, um, so I first arrived in the Palisades in 1968. I was two, and my dad got a job at UCLA molecular biology department, and we couldn't afford to be near UCLA. So at that time, Palisades was affordable. Um, it was like $40,000 for a house. So that's what they paid. Got a mortgage, Herzl Street. So, um. So, yeah. And now I live on. Oh, that feels hard to say. But. So I lived on Iliff. Yeah. Um, yeah, but I'm temporarily somewhere else. Yeah. My favorite memories, um, really have to do with the land. Um. My dad used to take us hiking in the rain, hiking on Thanksgiving, scaling waterfalls with a rope. Like there's pictures of me on his shoulders. Like we'd do these grueling hikes. And when the fire happened in 78, and he went up and fought the fire and saved Steve Kerr's house, like with a little hose. Um, but after that, we made the trail. There was like, the trails were like up and down the mountains to High Point. And, um, after that fire, we went out there with a shovel, and we made the switchbacks and made the trails around. So my favorite memories were really with the land. There's places I would go, um, just to kind of collect myself, um, because sometimes I was going through things as a, as a kid, and, uh, our household wasn't always the calmest place. And so it was a place of calm and and beauty. There's a and going down to the beach, too. And when I was little, like we hiked ourselves with no parents. We would hike all the way. We hiked to Topanga from the Herzl Street house. Like, can you believe that? Like nobody would let their kids do that. Now. I wouldn't let my kids do that now. Like, without there's no cell phones. Nothing. But. But they had taught us, you know, I don't know. And so we can we get to the payphone and Trippet ranch and say, hey, we're in Topanga. Can you pick us up? It's funny, there was a time when they were going to put a freeway through. Um, that's why the road up to the high school is so wide, you know? Um, and my dad actually was instrumental in blocking that. He was part of the Temescal Canyon Association, and he he has Asperger's, so his brain functions kind of differently. He's brilliant, but different. And, um, he researched what plots of land would need to be purchased to really block that project. So it's the kind of thing where you have to research a million small pieces of data and help them block that development. He was so anti-development that our car was always full of developer signs, because real estate developers would put signs on public property and he would snatch them up and put them in the back of our car, which is probably illegal. Our garage was full of them, so I just. But so I just feel personally attached to the preservation of that land and um, and the beauty. And then they made that parking lot at the bottom of Temescal and like and I'm looking at I'm like, nobody hikes here. Like, what is this? And now it's full all the time. And I go there and park there and pay $10 or whatever. And I feel like great. Like it's like, and you hike on those trails and you hear ten languages and like on one hike. And I mean, it's a very social event. It's like there's so many people. And, um, I just love that so many people are out there. So I love the Palisades for the land. I just, I love, um, I know that I know there was a lot of contention about the development. Like, you know, I grew up with Baskin Robbins and the street before Caruso and everything, but, um, I love seeing that green that he put in full of families, like hanging out there. Um, I love it. And I love, um, that I remember the gas station in the middle of town that it got changed into the village green. Like, I remember when it was a gas station. And so I love seeing, like, teenagers hang out there a ton. Um, like, I just love that that kind of sense of community hanging out together. Um, and I love, you know, I have two boys that, you know, they're teenagers now, but, um, like, tee ball in the park like that, that the whole scene of being out there with parents. Because at that age, you sit there and you watch the whole game, um, when they're older, they don't want you there, but necessarily. But then it was like so fun, like just the sense of the sense of community. It's really, really beautiful. It's so funny because Blue Ribbon seems like, like the blink of an eye to me. Because from 68 to now is a long time, so I'll share. There was there was a store called In Things. It was across from Baskin-Robbins. And when I was little, it was a really important store. Um, sold all kinds of stuff, but I used to make little barrettes that I hand-painted and little earrings made out of Sculpey clay that I like, and they sold them like they would like. I would give them inventory and they would sell it and give me money. Like to be an artist and be able to have your artwork sold in town was really significant. It meant a lot. So for it to be a place like that, uh, was really beautiful. But yeah, again, before Caruso, there was, um, kind of a Radio Shack, I think, in there. And, um, so my brothers would go into the dumpster, um, there was an alley back there and bring home the electronics, and our garage was like a lab, and, um, they would make things out of all that, and, um. And my brother even made, um, the smell that's in gas, you know. And then the gas company came out like there's a gas leak. And and then it's these kids had made this, and they thought it was funny. I mean, I'm not recommending this to anybody, but, um, but, like, just to have it be this. And there was a hobby shop where you could get anything and make anything. Oh, and my friend, um, Marnie, still, to this day, I grew up with, um, Marnie Diamond. Her memory of me is like, we walked home from Paly Elementary and stopped at the hobby shop, and I. I got some frogs that you could dissect, and we went home and dissected them because I was it was a science household I grew up in. And, um, like, she still remembers that to this day. Um, and I don't know if there's no place in town now. I mean, shopping doesn't happen that way anymore, but it was such a a village where for us, it was a village for exploration and learning. I think the Palisades community. Is about connection and caring and diversity. And that might sound weird because people don't think of it that way as representing diversity. But the kids that I was friends with, my brother's friends with both brothers and my sons are friends with are really from all over the world. And, um, and. To hold those connections over time, over decades is such a such a beautiful thing. So I feel like, um, in this moment where people are getting dispersed because of fire, I just hold space in my heart for the ongoing connections that endure and for what grows again in the future will nurture more connections that endure. And so I just I hold that space for the the caring across, across many different differences.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164601/file/299710#t=0.16,497.4"}]},{"id":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164601/file/299710/index/90468","type":"AnnotationPage","label":{"en":["Auto-generated Index (2025-12-15 22:31:22) [Index]"]},"items":[{"id":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164601/file/299710/index/90468/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Arriving in the Palisades and Family Beginnings","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164601/file/299710#t=0.0,43.0"},{"id":"https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164601/file/299710/index/90468/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The speaker recounts their family's move to the Palisades in 1968 when they were just two years old, prompted by their father's job at UCLA.
