Um, and I remember the worst kind of wind event that I'd ever experienced was back in 2012 for a couple of years, like about ten years ago, where, um, the power was knocked out for a week, and that was like the worst I'd ever seen. And so I had really I had a pretty high bar, I guess, for it to, for it to be actually worse than that. Um, and so the one thing I remember most is we came home, I came home from school and the first thing I did was I set up the generator, like, you know, like I knew how to do just so we can get the fridge running, um, and all the and everything else running. And then, um, my, then after we didn't have anything to eat for dinner. So we went out to the supermarket, we bought some sandwiches from the deli, and then we came home totally fine. Nothing was happening. We sat down to eat. I was nearly finished with my sandwich. And then when someone came knocking at our door and they said, I don't remember what they said, but they told my parents to come look outside. And being the curious person I am, and I even though they told me to stay in the house, I couldn't do that. And I went outside And the entire mountain to maybe a mile away was less than a mile or even less than a mile away, was just engulfed in flames. And I had never seen anything like that before. And. So I think one of the most important things I guess I took was I took my water polo parka, which, um, I am glad, I really am really glad I took because, um, I don't know, that's just sort of a reminder of my time in high school, I guess. Um, I've been on the water polo team for four years, and the parka was like the one thing that kind of kept me going, I guess. Um. What else did I bring? I don't even remember what all I brought, half the stuff I own now is just new. So, um, I took maybe a couple days worth of clothes I have. I do have, um, a pair of, like, sleep pants that are from the USA water polo brand, so I'm glad I brought those. Um, I don't know. I brought my phone, I brought. God, I don't even know what else I brought. Um, but. Well, I think the one thing that's probably most important is I brought a pillow from home, and, um, I think that's probably the most important thing I brought, because that reminds me of home. So it's kind of like I'm realizing now. It's just. It's just kind of stuff. I mean, sentimental value or not, um, there are things that can be replaced. Um, but there are also a lot of things that can't. So, you know, I remember making a pinewood derby model of a fire truck that burnt, um. I got a little wooden boat from my friend who went to Greece, and that's gone now. Um. But, you know, a lot of the other things, like a t shirt from a concert I went to that I can get again. But I think now it's just sort of. I sort of accepted that, you know, it's not going to be the same again, so might as well make the best of what I have now and going pretty well. So found the love of like, theater. It's really I don't know, it's kind of a interesting thing, but I had signed up in, uh, October of last year to be on the Passing, an all star production of Hadestown. Um, and so that's why I have this jacket on right here. And that was some of the best times of my life. And I, I think I've grown so much from, you know, being in theater and working with such a group of talented people that I think it's helped me find community. It's found I found a place where I'm supported more so than, you know, when I was on a team, you know, than on, like a water polo team because they while they supported me in different ways, I feel like being in the theater program, I felt a community where, you know, I was instantly accepted, where I was instantly valued. And that was really, really powerful for me, I guess. Um, and I met people that, you know, I have I'm now great friends with. And, um, I'm so excited to, you know, continue my life and, um, continue it with those people in it. It was just throughout the district. So the district, every two years, the district puts on, um, one big musical and invites everyone from the all the schools to participate. And so it's, you know, auditioning. It's, um, applications, I guess. And I just sort of applied on a whim and, you know, uh, and if they needed me, they needed me. And so, you know, I, uh, and then but yeah, it's it's over the course of, you know, like a couple months, you know, it's a preparation. Um, and like, our work as crew started in February, so, you know, it was just many, many days of, you know, set design, set building, costumes, sound engineering, and then it all culminated in like the end of February and beginning of March. It was five big performances. And we went on we went on tour to all the local elementary schools and talked to the kids who saw it. And, you know, that kind of restored a little bit of my faith in humanity. So
text/plain
https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164580/file/299689#t=206.83,497.99
https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164580/file/299689/transcript/88190/annotation/10
SPEAKER_S2: do you think that was a good exercise to, like, kind of take your mind off things? So I, you know, I was able to transfer that community over to my, my high school, Blair High School, um, and I joined their theater program. We put on Mamma mia! And so my love of, I guess, theater, tech and theater, I think that's something I found, um, I don't know, that's a that's a that's an interesting question. I haven't, I haven't really thought about it. I mean, I see all the advertisements online, you know, buy the latest model of this car or buy the latest iPhone. Um, but don't really feel that. just sort of, think at the end of the day, it is just stuff. t's material. So and think a lot of the important things are not tangible by wealth, guess. So, um, Um, yeah. So think 've done a little bit of both. Um, 'm in like an avid computer person. play video games a lot. love, you know, the online aspect. love talking to people online. And that's how make a lot of connections. And so, you know, one of the first things wanted to do was rebuild my computer because had built a computer myself back in 2023, and then got my first job just to save up for that. And still work there now, which is funny. Um, but that was one of the first things wanted to do was, you know, as soon as got settled, wanted to rebuild my computer. And that's been important for me. So because was able to a lot of the games that play, play with friends from school. And was wasn't able to do that for, for, you know, a good six months really. And that was it was kind of rough. So But think in other ways, um, 'm trying to become a different person, guess. Um, 'm becoming think 'm sort of taking my life in sort of a more independent way. Um, 've learned to use the Metro. 've learned to. 'm riding my bike everywhere now. Um, and so think my growing independence, think is definitely a result. think of the fire. Um, and so, yeah, mean, 'm able to get myself to places, you know, um, like the other day went, went to Koreatown on a whim because one of my friends needed an extra on a film. And so starred in that. And so think just my independence, guess, has sort of grown in the months following.
text/plain
https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164580/file/299689#t=561.28,716.26
["Auto-generated Index (2025-10-29 22:54:25) [Index]
https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164580/file/299689/index/90447/annotation/14
["Title
https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164580/file/299689#t=0.0,206.0
https://lapl.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3578/collection_resources/164580/file/299689/index/90447/annotation/15
The speaker recalls the events of January 7th, a day marked by strong winds and a sense of normalcy until disaster struck.
